The Bouwerie Lane Theatre at 54 Bond Street is a historic mixed-use cast iron building in the NoHo Historic District. Originally designed by Henry Engelbert and built between 1873 and 1874 as the Bond Street Savings Bank, the building later served as the German Exchange, loft and storage space, and the Bouwerie Lane Theatre. In 2007, it was converted into a high-end residential condominium with ground-floor commercial space.
Our restoration project focused on the cast-iron facade, which required a complete removal of the existing coating, fabrication and installation of new cast iron components, priming and repainting of the cast-iron facades, and replication and painting of a new sheet metal cornice. We also demolished and replaced the existing stairs at all three entrances with new cast-iron stairs and. In addition, we undertook sidewalk replacement and vault waterproofing to ensure that the building's exterior would be fully restored to its original condition.
The Bouwerie Lane Theatre is a significant historical landmark, designated as an individual landmark by the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission in 1967 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. We are honored to have received multiple awards for our work on this project, including the New York Landmarks Conservancy's Lucy G. Moses Preservation Award, SARA NY Chapter's Design Award of Honor, and SARA National's Design Award in 2018.
