At Wave Hill, the transition from a private residence to a publicly accessible estate and gardens posed challenges in accommodating visitors. One such challenge was the use of former tennis courts as a parking lot, with no significant changes made to the single-wide gate that served as the entrance for both automobiles and pedestrians. Additionally, a small block-like building provided limited shelter for Wave Hill personnel, who conducted transactions outdoors regardless of the weather.
To address these issues and improve the visitor experience, Wave Hill secured funding from the New York City Department of Design and Construction (DDC) for necessary improvements. CTA was entrusted with designing a solution that would enhance accessibility and provide better amenities. The design includes a reconfigured set of pathways and a new pedestrian gate that echoes the historic gate. A new information kiosk/gatehouse serves as a welcoming entry point, allowing visitors to conduct their transactions under a generous overhanging eave and providing year-round protection for personnel.
The design of the gatehouse received unanimous approval from the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission (LPC). Drawing inspiration from the existing structures at Wave Hill, the design incorporates local ashlar schist and a granite base, painted wood windows, and a simple slate roof with copper trim. By respecting the vernacular architecture and carefully integrating the new building into the landscape, the design ensures that the gatehouse harmonizes with the natural surroundings, preserving the garden's serene atmosphere.
With these thoughtful improvements, Wave Hill will be able to better accommodate visitors and provide a more enjoyable experience while enhancing its accessibility and functionality.
