Landmark West! Unsung Heroes of the Upper West Side Preservation Award, 2011

The American Youth Hostel in New York City carries a significant historical legacy, originally designed by Richard Morris Hunt, 1882-1883, as housing for war widows. Its transformation into the New York Branch of Hosteling International in the 1980s ensured its continued purpose and value to this day.

The restoration project focused on preserving the building's longevity for future generations. It encompassed the replacement of the full slate mansard roof and the meticulous restoration of deteriorated masonry. One notable aspect was the installation of cast stone and metal finials, meticulously crafted based on historical documentation. These finials not only added decorative flair but also played a crucial role in safeguarding the roof from water infiltration. By referencing historical records, our team made sure that the selection and installation of these elements stayed true to the original design and materials used during the building's construction.

In recognition of this outstanding preservation effort, the American Youth Hostel received the Landmark West! Unsung Heroes of the Upper West Side Preservation Award in 2011. This accolade celebrates the excellence demonstrated in the restoration work and its contribution to safeguarding this significant piece of New York City's history.
