The redevelopment plan for the Bedford-Union Armory is a great example of adaptive reuse, breathing new life into an existing structure while preserving its historical significance. The project provides much-needed recreational and community space, mixed-income housing, and office space, while creating employment opportunities for residents. The Armory's vast spaces have been reimagined to provide a mix of commercial and community uses, such as a recreation center, community center, basketball courts, and affordable housing.

Our involvement in this venture centered around serving as the design architect for New Heights Youth, one of the anchor tenants of the development project. Our scope of work included designing the interior spaces of administrative, academic, and courts areas from schematic design through design completion.

One of the critical challenges we navigated was crafting designs that met the needs of New Heights Youth, their staff, and the broader community. Striking the right balance between functionality and aesthetics, ensuring that these spaces not only look appealing but are also conducive to their intended purposes.

In addition to designing the interior spaces, we also coordinated with the developer and architect of record during all phases of design and construction. This collaboration was essential in ensuring that our designs were feasible and constructible while meeting the developer's vision and budget constraints.

As part of our role in the project, we also provided construction administration services. This included overseeing the construction process, ensuring that the design intent was maintained throughout the construction process, and addressing any issues that arose during construction.
