Dean Street

This four-story plus cellar-level brownstone is located on a prime picturesque residential block in Brooklyn’s Boerum Hill Historic District and was built circa 1915.

Our project at 253 Dean Street consisted of an interior renovation of the garden-level apartment and an exterior restoration of the street facade. Our client was looking to adjust the apartment’s layout and update its amenities, so CTA designed and developed an attractive renovation that included a new kitchen, bathroom, cellar-level laundry room, and cellar stairway. 

The new laundry room is a clean, brightly lit space designed to feel antithetical to its cellar location. The kitchen and bathroom both underwent gut demolitions and were updated in their entireties. The bedroom closets were repartitioned to allow for a new set of sliding doors to connect the bedroom and living room, allowing the two rooms to easily shift between open and intimate. We collaborated with Miles Redd on the interior design of the renovation, which included all new finishes.

The exterior component of the project included masonry restoration, lintel and sill replacement, brownstone resurfacing and stoop repair, wood cornice replacement and repair, and full window replacement. New stairs to the garden-level apartment, new planter and bluestone pavers at the front yard, and railing repairs were also included. Since the Dean Street apartment is located in the Boerum Hill Historic District, the exterior work had to be filed with and approved by the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission. The masonry restoration was done together with the neighboring 255 Dean because some of the deterioration bridged to two joined facades.
