Episcopal Church of St. Luke and St. Matthew

Built between 1888 and 1891, The Episcopal Church of St. Luke and St. Matthew is a landmarked Romanesque Revival structure designed by John Welch. Its design, including the adjoining chapel, takes inspiration from the Romanesque churches of Northern Italy. A defining moment in its history came in 1914, when a fire destroyed the main church, leading to its reconstruction in 1915.

CTA is leading a comprehensive restoration and renovation, with a major focus on restoring the terrazzo nave floor. Due to significant buckling and cracking, a new structural system and partial rebuilding were necessary to ensure the floor’s stability. The new terrazzo finish has been carefully crafted to match the century-old adjacent flooring, preserving the church’s historic integrity while making it suitable for contemporary use.

Additional upgrades include the installation of a new elevator, ADA-compliant single-stall restrooms, a kitchen renovation, office improvements, and enhanced interior lighting. Exterior work includes new lighting and updated church signage to improve both visibility and accessibility.
