Grace Church Brooklyn Heights, designed by Richard Upjohn and completed in 1849, underwent an impressive restoration project led by our team. Over the years, the church expanded to include the Parish house addition in 1935, which provided space for school and meeting room activities. In 2010, the Parish house underwent modifications with the addition of a metal-clad roof adjacent to the brick bulkhead.

CTA focused on the replacement of the main church nave roof and the false mansard roof at the adjacent parish house. To honor the building's historical significance, we installed historically appropriate copper batten seam roofs. The deteriorated and uninsulated asphalt shingle roof of the main church nave was carefully removed and replaced with a fully insulated copper roof, ensuring both durability and energy efficiency. Similarly, the asphalt shingle roof of the false mansard at the adjacent Parish house was replaced with a batten seam copper roof, seamlessly blending with the church's architectural style.

Our scope of work extended beyond the roofs. We addressed deteriorated wood decking, replaced roof hatches with lockable copper-clad hatches, relined the main roof gutters, and rebuilt the masonry parapets with through-wall flashing systems. We undertook the dismantling and rebuilding of the openwork masonry parapets at either gable end, incorporating through-wall flashing systems for enhanced waterproofing. Finally, localized repairs were made to the stone tracery at the church's stained glass windows, preserving their intricate beauty.

The careful preservation of Grace Church Brooklyn Heights earned prestigious awards, including the Lucy G. Moses Preservation Award and the Victorian Society in America Metropolitan Chapter Preservation Award in 2015.
