Glenwood Mason Plant Tour

CTA visited the Glenwood Mason Supply Company on May 25th, 2023, to tour the facility and hear more about their Glenwood Green Initiative.

Staff gathered to learn about their Concrete Masonry Units using Carbon Cure technology.  The Carbon Cure technology enables Glenwood to inject Sustainable CO2 captured from buildings right here in New York City into their block mix design, where the CO2 undergoes a mineralization process and converts into a solid mineral. This permanently removes the CO2 emissions from the atmosphere without compromising the block’s quality. In addition, the blocks contain ground glass pozzolan and industrial filler made from 100% recycled post-consumer glass, which drastically reduces the embodied carbon of the material.

The visit included a full walk-through of their production facility and a presentation on Glenwood’s history and mission to be a reliable, sustainable leader in the New York City area. The processes behind the carbon sequestration and carbon injection were explained in detail, and staff was able to ask questions about structural strength, material ingredients, and carbon sequestration.

For architects that are committed to placing sustainable principals into action, having Glenwood’s Green Initiative of using Carbon Cure Technology in CMU blocks, it is a great alliance for moving in the green direction.

CTA was glad to continue educating staff on sustainable best practices through this hands-on experience, and we’re looking forward to specifying the Green CMU in our projects!
